When there is no power, we use our fireplaces to keep warm

Now that the weather is nicer, I was able to finally turn off my furnace for the season.

This is part of my yearly Spring routine to get ready for the warmer months.

And here in Buffalo NY, we embrace the warmer months, and we take full advantage of them. Not only do we shut down our furnaces, but we also open our windows to allow fresh air inside our homes. Right now, the temperature has been hovering in the mid to high 60s which is too warm for the furnace and too cold for the air conditioner. So, my HVAC unit is getting a much-needed break especially after the Winter that we just had. We experienced unprecedented cold temperatures as well as catastrophic blizzards that crippled the city in ways that I have never seen. So, of course our furnaces were running more than normal to keep our homes comfortable. Unfortunately, during the last major snowstorm, millions of people were left without heat because they had no electricity as the storm caused major power outages. Fortunately, my family and I didn’t lose power during that storm, so we were able to keep our furnace running during and after the blizzard. Although many folks lost power, a lot of them were able to keep their homes warm using their fireplaces. That’s one of the great things about many of the older homes here in Buffalo, they were built with wood-burning fireplaces. So, even without power, families can still remain comfortable by using their fireplaces to stay warm. Anyway, I’m hoping that this coming Winter won’t be a repeat of the last one, but for now I’m going to enjoy the nice weather that we are getting.
