There are some rare individuals called “savants” that excel at things without ever practicing, but these people are few and far between. The rest of us have to put in time and effort to be good at things. For me, the focus was always on gardening. I felt that I was “in my element” when I was in a garden. After graduating college with a degree in horticulture and botany, I decided that if I wanted to learn how to grow cannabis, I needed to start in Portland, Oregon. For years I had heard that the cannabis farmers in the Portland area were some of the best in the world. I was not interested in merely learning the basics about cannabis farming, I wanted to know the advanced techniques that made the weed from Portland so much better than other crops. I visited several different Portland cannabis farms, where I offered to work for free just to see how they grew their crops. The first three cannabis farmers turned me down, because they didn’t want to show me their secrets. The fourth farmer was new to the Portland area, and needed a lot of extra help, so he brought me onboard. I was hesitant to accept, because I wanted an authentic Portland original to teach me, but then I found out that Gus had 30 years experience growing cannabis. I think he should be able to teach me a thing or 2.
