Getting familiar with terpenes

I recently began reading up on terpenes.

  • While I’ve been shopping at the cannabis dispensary in Muskegon for several years, I’ve never paid much attention to anything but THC and CBD percentages.

I’ve slowly become aware that terpenes have a big influence on the effects and my enjoyment of specific strains. These organic compounds are found in fruits, spices, herbs, flowers and all plant life. They are responsible for the unique aromas and flavors of the cannabis products. There are more than 200 terpenes found in the cannabis plant. Just like cannabinoids, they have different effects on the mind and body and offer curative benefits. I’ve learned to look for specific terpenes to target exact needs. Myrcene is one of the more common terpenes, offering an earthy and herbal aroma. It is helpful in treating anxiety, pain and stress. Limonene is another favorite of mine. I appreciate the citrusy scent and spicy flavors. It’s the same terpene found in lemons, oranges and grapefruit. Combining limonene with cannabinoids provides benefits as an antibacterial, antifungal and for elevating mood. Pinene is a terpene that smells just like a pine forest. It’s earthy but refreshing and can help to boost energy, improve focus and alleviate pain. Linalool smells a lot like lavender, and when mixed with cannabinoids such as THC, it provides a variety of therapeutic effects. Pain relief, immune support, anti-anxiety and muscle-relaxing properties are just some of the rewards. When I visit the dispensary, I make sure to consult with the budtenders. I ask about the terpenes, the cannabinoids and the new products available.
